LYL Statement on Jeremy Corbyn

London Young Labour (LYL) exists to promote Labour candidates and socialist values. Leaving the European Union is a huge blow to those values – it is much worse than losing a general election.

This will mean huge losses for young people. Lost jobs, opportunities, studying, friendships, relationships as well as a loss to London as a global city.

The LYL Executive would like to thank all party members, non-party members and members of other parties worked tirelessly to campaign for a Remain vote. Many young members played a vital role in securing the overwhelming results for Remain in London and for that we thank you. For all the phone banks, leaflet drops and campaigning, we thank you. We are just saddened that it was not enough for a Remain vote to prevail.

It is evident that during the referendum, Jeremy Corbyn did not deliver a clear or passionate Labour message for why to vote Remain. To those young people damaged by this result, there must be action. Jeremy Corbyn failed to articulate what so many young people believed  was right- to remain in the EU – and failed to turn large numbers of young people out to vote. His leadership left large proportions of our membership confused as to where Labour stood on the EU, and damaged us in Labour heartlands. In many Labour areas, the electorate voted to Leave the EU by a large margin, despite the party’s position backing a Remain vote. We believe that the Labour Party London Young Labour (LYL) exists to promote Labour candidates and socialist values. Leaving the European Union is a huge blow to those values – it is much worse than losing a general election.

This will mean huge losses for young people. Lost jobs, opportunities, studying, friendships, relationships as well as a loss to London as a global city.

Not only did Jeremy Corbyn fail to deliver passionate Labour messages about staying in the EU, he also refused to work with Britain Stronger In Europe, despite polls showing this would turn out Labour votes. Warnings were ignored, meetings cancelled and a desperately needed Labour message was lost. This result will have effects on everyone, but especially the poorest in our society- for decades to come. These are the people we seek to protect as the Labour party, and we have failed – Jeremy Corbyn has failed.

It is for these reasons that we express no confidence in the Leader of the Labour Party, and hope London Labour MPs will consider young members’ views.

Regards,
London Young Labour executive committee.
